Sue Pyper Fine Artist

BIO

I grew up and went to art school in London, uk and emigrated to Canada in 2000. I now call the beautiful Comox valley on Vancouver island home, and have my studio space in Cumberland BC.I have worked in a variety of media, including pen and ink, watercolour, and most recently, using live edge wood as a starting point. My pieces always begin with the form suggested by the natural object and I feel that in every material arising from nature, there is an intrinsic essence that reaches beyond the corporeal.

CRAFT

My inspiration as an artist lies primarily in the natural world: wild creatures, oceans, spreading trees, rugged coastlines and busy tidal pools. I’ve been drawn to these things my whole life, and as an immigrant to Vancouver Island from the UK I feel I have a different kind of appreciation for West Coast nature motifs than I might have had if I’d grown up here. I love the swirling, sculptural aspects of creatures like whales and seals and octopi, even pebbles and seaweed draw me in with their deep colours and curving symmetries.
