I create wearable art from Merino wool and silk textiles through the process of nuno felting. Tactility and functionality are central elements to my art making and crafting each piece by hand (a human labour intensive process) from fibres produced by living organisms (sheep and silk worms) allows my work to occupy a grounded space (in contrast to the predominantly digital, ephemeral, machine made nature of much of what is produced in the Western world).
I dye silk textile (gauze from Uzebekistan which is woven using traditional methods) in small batches, using techniques drawn from shibori and painterly approachs to colour application. I lay out a mix of commercially dyed and hand dyed Merino wool roving to create a collaged design and use a resist to separate design elements. Each design is mine and one of a kind. Felting occurs through my hands on application of soap, water, and massaging.
